[Rickenbacker 4003] RWRP Bridge Pickup Mod Tutorial

A few years ago I remember RIC corporate forum member BlueAngel posted that he had done an RWRP modification to his c. 2006 4003's bridge pickup. This mod essentially puts a 4003 on the same plane as a Jazz Bass as far as hum canceling, i.e. when both pickups are on, at the same volume and in the same phase there is significant 60 Hz hum reduction. Under other conditions (unequal volumes, 0.0047 cap in-line) the hum canceling won't happen.

I was intrigued by this mod. I had noticed the occasional hum issue with my 2007 4003, although it was not a frequent problem. It mostly happened at home and not at gigs. On the other hand, why wouldn't you want the option to cancel hum, when needed? For rock music, where I typically use both pickups full-on, it seemed like an ideal situation. After reading BlueAngel's description I tackled it and came out successful. But I was nervous doing the job; that I got it right the first time was a bit of skill and probably a bit of luck. Either way I was spared some frustration. The result was not even a slight change in tone, just an OCD-soothing absence of hum in the pickup blend mode. Years later this pickup configuration is still going strong for me; I recently gigged the 4003 and it was a show-stopper. Lots of compliments.

I recently decided to do this again for a second bass. It's the second time I've done this mod and I've made a photo tutorial for others who want to do the same.

1. Measuring the pickups--two single coils with fairly similar resistance are ideal for canceling hum.

2. Observe what the bottom of the pickup looks like for reassembling it. An eyelet connects the ceramic magnet to ground, as well as the lead shield and a second eyelet that grounds the pickup surround. Closer inspection of the primary eyelet shows the grounded end of the coil soldered to it and the hot end of the coil in a heatshrink-covered joint with the lead wire. These joints will have to be spliced.

3. I like to "label" the stock ground wire of the pickup coil with a piece of Scotch tape. This will be spliced back as the hot wire after reassembly. Cut the hot and ground connections on the coil side leaving a 0.5'' section behind so you can strip them later and have a decent-sized lead.

4. Remove the bobbin from the magnet and label the side that faces the bobbin "RP" (for reverse polarity). Rotate it 180 degrees horizontally, and put the cut leads back through the same holes in the magnet.

5. Remember to line up the bobbin and the magnet so that the screws will connect.

6. Reassemble the magnet, bobbin, and phenolic baseplate. Put heat shrink on the coil leads before soldering them in their new configuration (the one with the Scotch tape on it goes to the pickup lead wire).

7. This is how my pickup looks after reassembly. I measured it with the multimeter and it measures about 100 ohms higher than before--probably heat from the soldering iron creeping into the coil. In a few hours it will go back down to the room temperature value.

just to clarify that a little, the magnet gets flipped so the coil sits on the other side, and the two leads to the coil get reversed, so what was hot is now ground.

didn't realize the rp was the magnet. thought they were inside the coil. now i get it. Will try it out on my burg 4003 and assuming i like it my MF MID when it shows up....

It's a big ol' rubber/ceramic magnet.

It's a wonder that Rickenbacker hasn't thought to do this after al these years. I never had hum problems on mine, but this is a dead simple change to make.

I'm a long time Ric 4001 player. I got my first one in '73, and a few years later got another '73 used. I used them exclusively until the mid 80s, when I switched to a fretless Hondo II P/J bass (I made it fretless and added the J and a Kahler sammy bar) and then in '87 to my Ibanez 5 string. I've been playing 5's ever since, so I hadn't played many newer Rics. I played one at Guitar Center one day and was shocked by how fat the neck was. And another one I played at a recording studio had a neck that was almost the same thickness from the nut to the body! It was awful.

So back in '07 I had posted over at the Ric forum that they really should use some carbon/graphite in the neck to stiffen it up, and then they could go back to the nice slim necks they were known for.

So I get an email from John Hall telling me that they can't use graphite neck reinforcements because it's patented, and proceeds to give me the patent humber for the Moses graphite neck! Hall ended up saying "In any case, we have a much better idea anyway..." Which is what he has said about the lifting bridge issue and too narrow pickups on the 5 string.

So I write him back and explain that it's a patent for the "manufacture of a graphite neck" and has nothing to do with neck reinforcements, and how everyone and their mother uses graphite, including Fender, and that Moses will be more than happy to SELL you graphite rods for the neck, along with LMII and Stew-Mac. Plus the graphite neck was invented and patented by Rick Turner and Geoff Gould, and later licensed to Ned Steinberger, who has his own patent on it. I think there was also legal action against Moses (I think) by Turner, and that Ned was a witness in the case. But what ever that was, obviously all parties worked something out, and Moses now makes necks for Steinberger. Status makes graphite necks as well.

He writes back to tell me that he's familiar with the history of the graphite neck that I presented and "Nevertheless, our very experienced trademark and patent counsel believes the patent I cited does cover the way graphite is typically used in guitar necks."

He said they were asking the opinion on the forum because they were thinking about using graphite.

He also said the patent holder probably doesn't go after Fender because of their deep pockets, and that the rest of the list of builders I presented is "is peanuts".

I'm a big Rickenbacker fan, but some of the things they do just seem screwy to me. It's great to see them continuing to make the instruments the way they always did, except they aren't, as in the case of the bass necks and the over wound bass pickups.
